Carnival in Tenerife

Carnival in Santa Cruz

Carnival in Santa Cruz is, without a doubt, the most important and the most popular celebration of the year, when thousands of people dressed in costumes take to the streets to enjoy an event with the status of "Fiesta of International Tourist Interest". Get your costume on and mingle with the locals at any of the many fun events. It’ll be an experience you won’t easily forget.

El Coso

This is one of the great crowd-pullers of Carnival, with thousands lining the main avenue of the island’s capital. You certainly won’t find a better way to celebrate Carnival Tuesday than taking part in this large parade, where you’ll see the Carnival performing groups dance and sing in a show full of surprises.

Daytime Carnival

Having conquered the hearts of the people of Tenerife, the Daytime Carnival is bound to capture yours as well. Various musical performances for the whole family are held on a number of stages during daylight hours, while the Carnival groups fill the streets with local colour. A great show in an enviable climate.

Las Burras (The Donkeys)

Carnival is drawing to an end, but there’s still time for witches to turn into donkeys and terrorise the townspeople by holding their Sabbath and calling on the devil, although they’ll end up being burnt at the stake. This unique, traditional performance takes place in the municipality of Güímar, in the east of the island.

Matar la Culebra (Killing the Snake)

This ritual of Afro-Cuban origins is a good example of the various cultures that have blended together in the Canary Islands. The men dress up as black slaves and kill the snake, the symbol of evil, by whipping it to death. The town of Puerto de la Cruz is home to this tradition. Wouldn’t you like to experience it?
