A spa in the open air

Open to an ocean of clean waters that are especially rich in minerals, and sea spray that is charged with beneficial microparticles, with enviable weather and temperature conditions, the beaches of the Canaries are a privileged spa in the open air.

From the waves to the sea breeze, taking in the sand and the sun, everything about the beaches helps us to “recharge our batteries” and brings us a sense of well-being, both for our minds and for our bodies. The following advice could help you to extract all the benefits from the four elements that are present in this enormous natural spa:

Sea bathing (hydrotherapy)

A sea bathe off the beaches of the Canaries is an immersion in beauty and well-being. Sea water in general, and that of the Atlantic in particular, is the “amniotic fluid” that our body recognizes when it is submerged in it, and it contains the 89 elements that are present in our organism, ...

as well as vitamins and micro-organisms that free anti-microbe and hormonal substances. As the children of the sea that we are (all living beings originated in the primordial sea that covered the planet), our human skin has the capacity to absorb all these substances and to benefit from them. You only have to consider how sea bathing “revives” the skin and improves skin complaints (such as acne, dermatitis and even cuts). Similarly, the massage effect created by the waves increases the absorption, and has a draining effect, (which helps to eliminate toxins) and is extremely relaxing (the siestas after bathing are the clearest proof of that!)

How to get the most benefit: stay in the water for at least 15-20 minutes (to give the skin time to absorb the beneficial elements present in the sea water) and, when you come out of the sea, let your skin dry in the open air before you shower and apply sun cream. Feel the toning massage of the waves, by swimming or paddling on the shoreline.

Air bathing (aerotherapy)

Charged with negative ions (with detoxifying and relaxing effects) and full of mineral salts, the sea breeze is a beneficial spray for the respiratory system and the skin, which it nurtures and hydrates in depth.

How to get the most benefit: walk along the shore at least half an hour a day. Go for a walk near the sea (at a speed that increases the heart beat a little, but which enables you to hold a normal conversation). Stop every five minutes to breathe in deeply (noting how your stomach inflates) and then breathe out very slowly through your mouth (like a whisper), letting the powerful breeze penetrate completely into your lungs.

Sunbathing (heliotherapy)

Most Europeans have low levels of vitamin D in their bodies, and this is less likely for those who live in latitudes with a lot of sun, such as the Canaries. This is because our organism produces vitamin D naturally when we expose our skin to the UV rays of the sun. This vitamin is necessary for the absorption of calcium and to prevent osteoporosis,  ...

and new research has also suggested that good levels of vitamin D associated with exposure to sunshine prevent illnesses such as multiple sclerosis, hypertension, muscle pains and even breast cancer. And have you ever wondered why you feel happier and less stressed on the beach? The answer once again is sunlight, which stimulates the secretion of endorphins, which are the substances that create the sense of well being and relaxation.

How to get the most benefit: The most recent recommendations from experts (including the Nobel Prizewinner Michael Holick, who established the importance of vitamin D in the body) is to get 20 minutes of sun without protection, and then cover up appropriately, by using sun creams and by staying in the shade. This is the amount of exposure to the sun that is associated with the best health, both mentally and physically.

Sand bathing

Lying down on the beach covered with a layer of sand – “charged with the sea” – is a complete beauty and health treatment (many beauty centres nowadays use sea sand baths as a form of treatment). Similarly, sand from the beach is a marvellous natural exfoliante, ...

as well as being the best surface for walking and exercising feet, legs and thighs.

How to get the most benefit: try rubbing your arms and thighs with wet sand to clean pores, eliminate dead skin cells and stimulate cellular renovation. Ask your partner, friends or children to “bury you in the sand” for 15-20 minutes. Go for a walk along the wet sand.

Holistic treatment

Water, air, sun and sand from the beach do not act alone, but combine their effects, thus creating the maximum effect. Added to these four elements are the sound of the sea, with a type of sound wave that aid states of relaxation, and the movement of the water itself when we float on our backs in it, and which takes us back to the comforting sensations experienced in the womb, and also favour the flow of oxygen to the brain, thus improving our intellectual performance. The treatment is completed by seaweeds which can be found on the beach and used as wraps charged with oligo-elements (richer in minerals than any other plant), with anti-cellulitic and toning effects.
